One Life - Comings and Goings. Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. - Acts 13:1-4 ESV Lausanne Occasional Paper "People on the Move" 2023. Christianity is a missionary faith par excellence since it is a faith that was born to travel. In fact, the mobility of its adherents and the moving nature of God is what makes the Christian faith a transportable and translatable faith as it continually transcends borders of all kinds over time. The movement of people is of utmost significance to the Christian faith as displaced people have reconfigured the contours of its growth and expansion throughout its history. Since its inception, Christianity has diffused across cultural and geographical lines repeatedly, and many different people in varied places have been the chief representative of Christianity. The Christian faith cannot be bound to a location or domesticated by any people because its nature is to break free of the prisons we enshrine it in. It is constrained to continually move from one place to another because it is a quintessential missionary, translatable and mobile faith. Seeing God as a moving person and his ongoing work as a result of the moving of God is a helpful way to develop a theology and missiology for a moving world. A fresh formulation using Motus Dei can help in this regard, and it is consistent with the biblical, historical and ongoing work of God in the world. Key Takeaway - Mobility is part of God's Design. Realize that where you live is by God’s design, it is no accident. He has marked out the place you should live. Recognize yourself as the one being sent, a missionary to your circle of influence. Our one life should be a beacon to others. Ask God to show you those who need to hear His message of love for them- you may be the only one they hear it from. Seek after God in community, if you are contemplating a move- fast and pray with others to confirm what the Holy Spirit is prompting you to do.
